The Sikkim Democratic front Government for the first time institutionalised the process of extending ovations and giving due recognitions who have contributed to the building of modern Sikkim.

• Books are being written on renowned citizens of
Sikkim and awards are being given.
• As a mark of respect to the last Chogyal of Sikkim Palden Thondup
Namgyal, a life size statue has been installed at Palden Thondup Namgyal
Memorial Park, Deorali. Statues of other Chogyals are being sculpted.
The world famous Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology has been
rechristened as Namgyal lnstitute of
Tibetology.
• On the occasion of silver jubilee celebrations of Sikkim Legislative
Assembly (16 May, 2000), Chief Minister, Dr. Pawan Chamling felicitated
the first members of the Legislative Assembly.
• On the occasion of the golden jubilee celebration of Independence Day
140 eminent persons who had excelled in various fields and those who had
made significant contributions towards the over all development of the
state were felicitated.
• By organizing Sikkim Samman Sammilan the state honoured the Nepali
speaking people who had made significant contributions to the Nation.
• The SDF Government felicitated members of the business community who
had since long contributed towards the development of Sikkim.
• The Government is in the process of galvanizing consensus to declare a
cut off year for the domicile status of the business community who have
been residing in Sikkim since long.

• The first Chief Minister of Sikkim, Kazi Lhendup Dorji Khangsarpa has
been honoured by the highest Sikkimese civilian award, "Sikkim Ratna"
and he was also awarded with "Padma Vibhushan", the prestigious civilian
award of the nation. On the recommendation of the State Government
"Padma Shri" was awarded to famous film actor Shri Danny Denzongpa,
litterateur Shri G.S Lama, Lepcha musician Sonam Tshering Lepcha. Martyr
Shri Sanjog Chhetri was also awarded with "Ashok Chakra ".
• For the first time a Sikkimese has been appointed as the Judge of
Sikkim High Court.
• The Government also felicitated the first mountaineers who scaled the
Mount Kanchendzonga
