1)During last two years the increase in the number of domestic and foreign tourist visiting Sikkim was 18 %,17 %, and 20%, 19% respectively.

2)Tourist spots have been developed throughout the state and have been well published in all leading national and international magazines.

3)By placing Tourism in the category of Industry unlimited opportunities have been opened.


4)The state is encouraging adventure sports, rafting, trekking and rock climbing. It represents the state in ASEAN Car Rally, Mountain Bike Rally and exhibits Para gliding. The state has opened up three mountain peaks for alpine expedition.

 

5)The government has, by providing wayside amenities generated more than 15,000 jobs for local youths.

6)There has been an increase in the revenue earned through tourism. The revenue has reached Rs 60 - 70 crores. To support this trend the state and central government is spending RS.25 crores each year on tourism.

7)The state has adopted effective strategy to attract tourists. Besides, the agents of Tour and Travel agencies are being regularly trained and made sensitive to environmental issues.

 

8)His Excellency the President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam while inaugurating "International Travel and Tourism Summit" in Delhi in April 2005 praised the development of eco- tourism in Sikkim. He then called upon all the states to follow Sikkim as an example.

 

9)More passes are being issued to vehicles going to Nathula Tourist spot.


10)After 1995 under the guidance of tourism department 200 travel agencies have been established.

11)Many tourist centers have been opened for domestic and foreign tourists.


12)Sikkim was represented in the International tourist festival. For the first time tourist diary and calendars were published in 2005.

 

13)After passing a resolution which declares Sikkim an eco friendly state, moves are on to lead the state towards the goal.

 
14)Two documentary films on the tourist spots of Sikkim and its trekking routes were made and exhibited.
 

15)To develop tourism industry the tourism department has launched projects at various levels.-
i. Under destination development program : Butterfly Park, Entertainment Park and recreation parks are being established.
ii. Under circuit Development program: tourist spots, view points, cafeteria, and ideal houses of the three communities are being constructed.
iii. Rural tourism and flower exhibition centers are being constructed.

16)By organizing food, handicrafts, cultural and tourist exhibitions the tourism sector is being encouraged.

17)To attract domestic tourist, festivals are being organized in all the four districts and sub divisions of the state. Regularly training programs and directives are being given to hoteliers, taxi drivers and tourist guides of the state.

18)All the tourist centers and towns of Sikkim are being refurbished to bring them at par with the International level. Recently a team of town planners of Singapore returned after touring Sikkim. Ground level works in this direction has already been completed.

19)Keeping in mind the convenience of the tourists the tourism department has constructed many hotels, houses and thatched houses. Under CSS many rest houses have been constructed and facilities extended. The construction of tourist lodge at Singhik, and road leading to Borang Tato Pani and Gyangyap Tato Pani the construction of infrastructure comes to completion.

 

20)To turn tourism as an industry of every village and every house the government has started developing tourist centres in each constituency. The government intends to introduce the tourist to the cultural diversity of Sikkim and to take them to every village.

21)Tourism Ministry of government of India has short listed Chemche, South Sikkim as a spot for the establishment of and development of "Himalayan Centre of Adventure and Eco-tourism". This work will cost Rs.60 crores.

22)The Chief Minister, for the first time was personally present in Berlin, the capital of Germany to attend the International Tourist Festival in March 2006. His presence has introduced the international community to the vast possibilities of Sikkim tourism Industry.
