Considering the significance of Information Technology in the 21st century, a separate Information Technology Department has been created to ensure its development in Sikkim.
The SDF government has raised India Reserve Battallion in Sikkim.
Rongli Sub-Division was created to extend administrative convenience to the people of remote villages. Ministers and heads of the department meet continuously to assess the status of different projects. On many occasions, problems of the citizens are solved on the spot.
System has been introduced which requires the Department to submit monthly progress report. This is expected to bring administrative transparency and a sense of responsibility among the employees.
Sikkim is the first state in the country to introduce the system of Smart Card Operable in State Transport Authority (SCOTA) in the Transport Department. The state already has the system of issuing smart card license and vehicle registration.
In the state" Patent Information Centre" and "Biomass Centre" have been opened.
The Chief Minister personally listens to the grievances
of the people every week. The people of West and South are allowed to meet
him on Mondays and the people of North and East District on Tuesdays. The
grievances are forwarded to the concerned Departments for immediate.
redressal. Similarly Fridays and Saturdays are kept for government
employees/Panchayat members, and ex-MLAs, Ministers and MLAs, respectively.

"State Remote Sensing Application Centre" has been started in the state.
The Right to Information Act has been implemented in the state.
The departments have been computerized, officials trained and websites which are people centric have been created.
The government computerized all land records, mutation and voters list. This has eased the life of the people.
Most of the government officials were given computer related trainings.
Government is trying to make everyone computer literate. Moves are on to convert Sikkim into a knowledge based society.
In 2004, the Information Technology Department of the Central government prepared a list of E- readiness states. In this report the position of Sikkim was adjudged the best among the North Eastern states.
The state has installed 7 video conferencing systems whereby it connects the Raj Bhawan, Chief Ministers Residence and all District Headquarters. This was done to reach decisions fast on issues concerning the problems of the people.
To remove problems arising out of linguistic diversity an e-mail system based on "Unicode' has been started.
The Treasury, Sales tax and Transport Departments have all been computerized.
Old age pension. tender notice, advertisement of jobs.
issue of scholarship forms has become easy through e -governance.

Tashiling Secretariat has been computerized. Other department will also be computerized and linked in near future.
A website CM on line has already been started. Through this citizens can keep the Chief Minister informed about their grievances.

A Block Administrative Centre with all facilities has been set up at Ranka, East Sikkim at a cost of RS.1.5 crores with a view to extend administration even to the villages. 16 Block Administrative Centres have already been constructed.
A regional mini Secretariat is being constructed for South and West districts at Karfectar.
In all the four districts of the state, Community Information Centres have been established. There are 45 such centres in all.
A Software Technology Park has been established at
Gangtok.
