The environment of the state is well protected and preserved.
Grazing of domestic animals in forest land has been banned.
The state has framed laws to preserve and protect its forest and wild animals.
There is a complete ban on use of polythene, pan masala and gutka in the state. Sikkim is the first state to ban the use of polythene.
The MG Marg of Gangtok has been declared as Litter & Spit Free Zone
By establishing "Smriti Vans" (Memorial forest), the people are being sensitized on issues concerning environment. All the vacant government lands of the state have been declared "Smriti Van Zone". Today, there are 166 Smriti Vans in the state. Sikkim is the first state in the nation to implement such scheme.
14 medicinal plant gardens have been established in the state.
In North Sikkim about 17,250 Hec. firing range area which had been given by the earlier government to the Army has been taken over by the present government.
State Medicinal Plant Board has been set up.
"State Green Fund" has been created.
The state has imposed environment fees.
All Gram Panchayats have been directed to identify and register the available medicinal plants in their respective areas.
A number of parks and gardens have been developed and beautified.
289.34 km. long jhoras and rivers have been trained along with minor irrigation projects.

Every years forestation program is being implemented at the state level. Along with Green Mission, "green Road" program has been launched. From this year the involvement of the entire population of the state has been encouraged through the implementation of the three years long "Rajya Harit Abhiyan". A declaration has been made to award the best constituency after three years.
Environment related subjects have been included in the school syllabus and "Green Club" has been opened in Government schools.
The government has instituted "Himal Rakshak Award" to best performing individuals and organizations for their role in preserving the environment.
There is a 2% growth in the total forest cover in the state.

The government has framed a wide-ranging environment protection policy.
For having done commendable job in the field of environment protection and preservation Hon'ble Chief Minister, Dr. Pawan Chamling was graced with the title of "Greenest Chief Minister of India"
To protect the religious sanctity of Mt. Kanchendzonga, the SDF Government has banned the scaling of this mountain right upto the peak. Eight peaks, precipices and lakes are also declared sacred.
The vast diversity of fauna is being traditionally and scientifically preserved.
To reduce the dependence of people on forest for firewood the government is distributing LPG connections to the citizens free of cost.
The government has banned the commercial export of medicinal plants.
