• An independent Department of Science & Technology was created in 1996.

• To popularize science a "Science library" has been established in the state.

• To popularize science and to promote scientific temper among the younger generation, the government has decided to organize "National Children' Science Congress" in December 2006. This Congress was graced by the presence of His Excellency the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

• A sub- regional centre of Science has been set up.

• Tissue culture laboratory has been set up and cultured plants produced.

• Training has been imparted on orchid, mushroom, floriculture to more than 2006 unemployed youths.

• Completed Research & Development project on Hippophae of Sikkim.

• 2 x 100 KW hydel project at Thangu, North Sikkim (14,000 ft.) has been installed.

• Standard Frequency Satellite and six tele-clocks have been installed in the state.

• Eight earthquake monitoring stations with digital seismograph have been installed in different parts of the state.

• Cardamom drier has been installed in nine places in the state.

• The construction of a plant for disposal of plastic wastes of Gangtok town is being taken up
